The producer and the place
The estate takes its name from the small Jaubertie stream, which still runs through the property. According to the history it relates, the château was a hunting lodge of Henri IV, who gave it to Gabrielle d’Estrées, then, during the Revolution, the home of Léon Beylet, physician to Marie-Antoinette, who completed the building in the Directoire style. After a fire in 1916, the pediment was rebuilt. The château has been listed as a historic monument since 2005. It has belonged to the Ryman family since 1973: Hugh Ryman, an oenologist, and Anne Ryman, the estate’s director, work there with their team.
What they produce
The vineyard covers 42 hectares on the edge of the Monbazillac appellation, on three kinds of soil: a plateau of limestone under clay, for the reds, limestone slopes, for the whites, and low-lying ground of grey clay, known as boulbène, for the rosés and some whites. Conversion to organic farming began in 2005, and the whole vineyard has been certified since 2008. The white varieties are sauvignon, sémillon, muscadelle, chardonnay and, more recently, chenin. For the reds, merlot, malbec, cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon grow alongside two old varieties of the South-West, mérille and fer servadou. The red wines are bottled without filtration. The range includes the Tradition cuvée, the Mirabelle, which takes in a Monbazillac, the Monologue, Les Cépages Oubliés, made with no additives, and the Colombier, produced only in great vintages, along with a natural sparkling wine, Joe & Bertie, and a brut rosé.
At the château
The estate receives visitors at Colombier, in its tasting room, open all year round at the hours it publishes; tastings there are free on opening days. A guided tour of the vineyard and the cellars, lasting about three quarters of an hour and followed by a tasting, is by reservation, as are the tours paired with food and wine or with cheese and charcuterie; groups are received by appointment. These visits are arranged directly with the estate, which sets its own terms and invoices them itself.
